It’s not every day you get to sit down with a colleague who’s been more like a co-traveler on a long and evolving journey. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Mr. Vishnu S, currently our Deputy General Manager – Marketing, since the very beginning of our cmercury story. As Vishnu completes an inspiring 11 years of service, I thought there’s no better time to have a candid chat about his growth, challenges, memorable moments, and what still drives him.
Jijo: Vishnu, first of all—congratulations on completing 11 incredible years at cmercury. You’ve seen this company evolve in every sense. How would you sum up your journey so far?
Vishnu:
Thank you, Jijo! Honestly, it feels surreal when I look back. What started as a role in client servicing gradually turned into a fulfilling journey across product management and now into leading the entire marketing vertical. It’s been a mix of learning, unlearning, adapting, and growing—professionally and personally. Every phase brought new energy and purpose.
Jijo: You’ve grown through multiple roles—Client Servicing Executive, Product Manager, Group Product Manager, and now DGM – Marketing. Which transition challenged you the most?
Vishnu:
The shift from client servicing to product management was the most challenging, no doubt. I had to wear two hats—representing client needs while aligning with engineering realities. It required a lot of cross-functional understanding, stakeholder management, and technical fluency. But that role became a bridge that helped me see the product from multiple lenses—business, user, and engineering—which is something I still value in my marketing role today.
Jijo: I remember you receiving the Best Performance Award in your early years. That was a proud moment for all of us. Do you recall what that meant to you?
Vishnu:
Oh yes, I remember it vividly. That recognition came during a phase when I was handling several high-pressure client accounts and trying to go the extra mile every single day. It meant the world to me—not just as a personal win, but as validation that hard work and ownership are noticed. It gave me the motivation to take on bigger responsibilities.
Jijo: Over these 11 years, what opportunities excited you the most?
Vishnu:
One of the most exciting opportunities was being able to influence the product roadmap based on real client feedback during my time as Product Manager. Later, transitioning into marketing gave me the chance to build a scalable strategy from scratch—right from messaging to demand generation. Watching our brand mature and gain industry attention has been immensely satisfying.
Jijo: And what were the most satisfying moments—or times when you felt, “Yes, this is why I do what I do”?
Vishnu:
There are several memorable moments, but one that really stands out was during the early days of marketing automation—around 2015–16—when we successfully implemented an automated welcome email series for new users registering on Hopscotch’s website. At that time, automation was still in its infancy, and we had to rely on a lot of manual testing, trial-and-error configurations, and workarounds due to limited tech capabilities.
Despite the complexity, the campaign ended up being a game-changer. It played a key role in converting new sign-ups into transacting customers, and we received direct appreciation from Hopscotch’s top management for the impact it made. That moment made me feel, “Yes, this is exactly why I do what I do”—solving problems and delivering value that matters
Jijo: You and I have seen a lot of change—people, processes, priorities. What do you think has kept you grounded and motivated all these years?
Vishnu:
Honestly, it’s the culture and the people. There’s a certain sense of trust and autonomy here that makes you want to give your best. Also, I enjoy the thrill of solving new problems. No two years have been the same. Every phase brought fresh challenges and learning curves, and that’s what kept me from ever feeling stuck.
Jijo: As someone who’s been here from the beginning, what advice would you give to young professionals who want to build a meaningful career in SaaS or digital marketing?
Vishnu:
I’d say—stay curious and keep learning. The tech and marketing landscape changes fast, so flexibility is key. Also, understand people—whether it’s clients, colleagues, or customers. Empathy is underrated in tech roles. And most importantly, focus on creating value—for your team, your users, and your company. Growth and recognition will naturally follow.
Jijo: Beautifully said, Vishnu. On behalf of everyone at cmercury, I want to thank you for your unwavering commitment and contribution. It’s been an honor growing this organization alongside you.
Vishnu:
Thank you, Jijo. It’s been a shared journey, and I’m grateful for all the support and camaraderie. Here’s to building more milestones together!
